US auto-safety regulator orders recall of over two million Tesla cars due to safety flaws

In a significant blow to electric car giant Tesla, the company has been compelled to recall more than two million vehicles as a major safety flaw comes under intense scrutiny. The recall follows concerns raised by car safety experts, particularly regarding Tesla’s latest Cybertruck, which has faced questions about its safety features, notably the absence of a ‘crumple zone.’

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, recently introduced the Cybertruck, boasting about its safety features and robust construction. However, critics have expressed apprehension about the potential dangers posed by the vehicle, specifically questioning the safety of the “ultra-hard stainless-steel” material used in its body. Unlike many modern cars equipped with a ‘crumple zone’ to absorb crash impact, the Cybertruck’s material doesn’t crumple easily, raising safety concerns.

Adding to Tesla’s woes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has ordered the recall of millions of Tesla cars due to concerns about the Autopilot system. An investigation revealed that the driver assistance function is insufficient in keeping drivers engaged and may lead to foreseeable misuse. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised to send an over-the-air update to fix the issue, the NHTSA still classifies it as a recall.

An NHTSA spokesperson emphasized the potential of automated technology to improve safety but underscored the importance of responsible deployment. The regulator views the recall as an example of prioritizing safety in improving automated systems.

This recall comes amid an increased focus on safety concerns surrounding Tesla vehicles. The move underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Tesla in maintaining public trust and regulatory compliance.

As Tesla grapples with these safety issues, the spotlight remains on the company’s commitment to addressing concerns, enhancing safety features, and navigating the evolving landscape of autonomous driving technology.
