Court ruling looms as Prince Harry starts a solo UK trip amid palace confusion
Prince Harry has returned to the UK for a week of public engagements, but his visit has begun under the shadow of a major court decision and fresh confusion over where he will stay.
The Duke of Sussex is starting his schedule in London with an event for the Invictus Games, the charity he founded for injured military veterans. Later in the week, he is due to visit Birmingham, where the Games will be held next year.
The Prince Harry visit comes as he awaits the result of his latest legal battle against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. Harry and several other high-profile figures brought claims alleging unlawful information gathering, which the publisher has strongly denied.
The group includes Sir Elton John, Sir Simon Hughes, Liz Hurley, Sadie Frost and Baroness Doreen Lawrence. The court ruling is expected on Tuesday and could mark the final stage in a series of newspaper battles the prince has fought against parts of the British press.
The outcome may not deliver a simple winner. If the judge accepts some claims and rejects others, both sides could try to claim success. For Harry, however, the case remains part of a much wider fight over what he has described as dishonest media practices.
The Prince Harry visit is also attracting attention because Meghan, Archie and Lilibet are not in London with him. Security concerns mean the Duchess and the children have not joined him in the capital, although the report says they could still come for the later part of the trip outside London.
The trip had a confused start after Harry’s team announced that an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace had been accepted. The Palace rejected that account, saying the prince had been told on Saturday that he could not stay because he had not responded to the invitation in time.
That dispute has added another layer of tension to a visit already surrounded by speculation about whether Harry might rebuild ties with his family. Questions remain over whether he will meet King Charles III during the trip.
The Prince Harry visit had also raised discussion about whether the King might see his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. They have not been in the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. With Meghan and the children absent from London, any such meeting has become more complicated.
Harry is not expected to see Prince William during the visit. However, he may spend time with the Spencer side of his family, with reports suggesting he could stay at Althorp, the estate where his mother, Princess Diana, is buried.
If Archie and Lilibet come to the UK later in the trip, it could give them the chance to visit the grave of the grandmother they never met.
For now, the Prince Harry visit is being shaped by three pressures at once: charity work, a court verdict and unresolved family tensions. His public schedule will highlight Invictus and other UK charities, but the legal ruling and palace accommodation row have already pulled focus.
