ALVR enhances VR game streaming on Linux with pipe-wire support

The new ALVR v20.9.1 release brings improved audio support on Linux, enabling seamless VR game streaming via wi-fi

ALVR (Air Light VR), a promising tool for streaming VR games to headsets via Wi-Fi, has taken a significant step forward with its latest release, v20.9.1. This update brings substantial improvements to the Linux platform, particularly in audio support, making the VR experience more accessible and efficient for Linux users.

Despite some ongoing challenges with SteamVR on Linux, ALVR continues to push the envelope. The inclusion of PipeWire support in this update marks a major milestone. PipeWire, a modern multimedia framework, allows ALVR to offer robust out-of-the-box audio functionality on Linux, eliminating the need for any additional external software. This advancement positions Linux not only on par with but potentially ahead of Windows in terms of support for VR game streaming.

The developers expressed their excitement in the release post: “PipeWire support was in the making for a long time. Finally, now audio works out of the box on Linux without the need for any external software except the PipeWire system package. This puts Linux on par, if not on better support status, than Windows!”

  • A new launcher has been introduced, enhancing ease of use.
  • GPU checks for Linux have been added to ensure optimal performance.
  • Numerous tweaks to the dashboard provide a more intuitive and user-friendly interface.
  • Hands and controllers are now visible in the lobby, adding to the immersive experience.
  • Recentering in the lobby is now possible, improving the functionality and flexibility of the VR environment.
  • Controller detection issues on the Pico Neo 3 Link have been resolved.
  • A fix for the HEVC black screen on Linux/VAAPI has been implemented.
  • Restrictions on device selection with VoiceMeeter have been loosened, offering more customization options.
  • Extensive documentation changes and internal refactorings have been carried out, thanks to contributions from several developers.

In addition to these improvements, ALVR has also made its debut on Meta AppLab and will soon be available on PICO Lab, expanding its reach and accessibility.
