Williams described the initial alarm going off at 04:00, followed by the rapid arrival of the fire brigade. What initially seemed like a small fire confined to one flat quickly escalated, spreading to neighbouring flats.
Williams observed the severity of the situation, noting that five flats were heavily damaged by flames, while an additional 15 to 20 flats suffered potential smoke damage. Emotions ran high among the residents, with many feeling shaken and distraught. Conservative MSP for Central Scotland, Graham Simpson, who also resides in the block, highlighted the extent of the fire’s progression, indicating that it had spread from the fifth floor up to the sixth floor and into the stairwell.
Despite the challenging circumstances, all residents were safely evacuated, with emergency crews remaining on-site throughout the day. Simpson acknowledged the limitations faced by firefighters due to the design of the flats, which hindered their access to the blaze. He commended their efforts but emphasized the need to address the structural challenges.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, authorities urge residents to prioritize safety measures, while offering support to those affected by the incident.
