The Sussexes quietly lived in a secluded Cotswolds farmhouse before moving into Frogmore Cottage
Before settling in California and building a new life in Montecito, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quietly called an unexpected corner of the English countryside home.
Long before Frogmore Cottage became their official royal residence, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly lived in a secluded farmhouse in the Cotswolds while renovations transformed their future family home.
The property, known as Westfield Large, sat in Oxfordshire and reportedly carried a value of around $3.3 million in 2018. Hidden among rolling countryside, the farmhouse offered something the royal couple appeared to crave privacy.

Their stay there was never intended to dominate headlines.
According to reports, Harry and Meghan used the rural retreat as a temporary base while major work took place at Frogmore Cottage. The historic property, gifted to the couple by the late Queen Elizabeth II after their 2018 wedding, underwent substantial renovations to convert it into a five-bedroom family home.
Those upgrades reportedly cost around $3 million between late 2018 and spring 2019. Harry and Meghan also allegedly paid for selected fittings, furnishings and extras that exceeded publicly funded allowances.
But while builders worked on Frogmore, the couple reportedly slipped away to country life.
Their lesser-known farmhouse stood close to the luxury Soho Farmhouse hotel and not far from the Cotswolds retreat owned by David and Victoria Beckham. Sources previously claimed Meghan had quickly fallen for the area, embracing its slower pace and secluded atmosphere.
The farmhouse itself sounded far from modest.
Reports described four bedrooms in the main residence, an attached converted barn featuring two kitchens and a sitting room, plus a separate two-bedroom cottage designed for guests or staff. Spread across roughly four acres, the property gave the Sussexes space far removed from palace routines.
The couple reportedly signed a two-year lease before their May 2018 wedding. Yet their stay would prove far shorter than expected.
The countryside escape also became a social hub for high-profile visitors.
According to reports, Harry and Meghan hosted close friends at the property away from public attention. Guests allegedly included George Clooney and Amal Clooney, alongside tennis icon Serena Williams and husband Alexis Ohanian, as well as Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas.
Sources quoted in 2019 claimed the pair enjoyed walking their dogs, entertaining friends and spending time in near-total solitude.
That privacy, however, reportedly did not last.
The Sussexes were said to have left the Cotswolds home in May 2019, shortly after welcoming their son, Prince Archie.
Reports linked their departure to the publication of paparazzi photographs showing interior rooms inside the property. The images allegedly triggered security concerns, effectively ending the couple’s quiet chapter in the countryside.
Before Montecito, before California headlines and streaming deals, there was this hidden farmhouse a temporary royal refuge tucked deep in the English countryside.
For a brief period, it offered Harry and Meghan something increasingly difficult to secure: distance from scrutiny. In the end, even that escape reportedly proved impossible to protect.
