With 39 cases reported nationwide, including 12 in Sindh, health authorities face scrutiny over-vaccination efforts
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has raised an alarm over a troubling increase in polio cases throughout Pakistan, particularly in Sindh province. The recent confirmation of two new polio cases—a girl in Sanghar and a boy in Mirpurkhas—has intensified concerns regarding the effectiveness of ongoing vaccination campaigns. This brings the total number of reported polio cases across the country to 39, with 12 of those occurring in Sindh alone.
Dr Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, the PMA Secretary General, voiced his grave concerns about the rise in infections. “The latest reports indicate that the situation is critical. We need to evaluate the impact of our vaccination efforts seriously,” he stated. The confirmation of these cases has placed a spotlight on the vaccination drives, which were intended to immunise children against the poliovirus effectively.
The PMA’s statement emphasised that the poliovirus has now been detected in nine districts across Sindh, with alarming reports of positive environmental samples as well.
