Security checkpoint apprehends suspect with a shotgun, handgun, and fake identification documents

In a concerning security incident, a 49-year-old man from Las Vegas was arrested at a checkpoint outside a Donald Trump rally in Coachella, Southern California, on Saturday night. Authorities discovered a loaded shotgun, a handgun, ammunition, and several fake passports inside his unregistered black SUV.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco provided details during a news conference on Sunday, stating that deputies, assigned to security at the rally, stopped the man as he approached the checkpoint. The vehicle bore a “homemade” license plate, raising suspicions among law enforcement.

The suspect claimed to be a journalist, although it remains unclear whether he possessed the appropriate credentials to substantiate that claim. Upon searching the vehicle, deputies found it in a state of disarray, leading to the discovery of the firearms and multiple identification documents featuring different names.

Authorities arrested the man on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm and having a high-capacity magazine, according to a statement from the sheriff’s department. He was subsequently released on bail set at $5,000 the same day.

Sheriff Bianco reassured the public that the incident did not compromise the safety of former President Trump or the event’s attendees, noting that Trump had not yet arrived at the rally when the arrest took place.
