Rising rates of gonorrhoea and syphilis diagnoses prompt urgent concerns over public health and sexual health services

In a concerning turn of events, health officials in England are grappling with a surge in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with gonorrhoea and syphilis diagnoses reaching unprecedented levels. The UK Health Security Agency (UKSHA) reports a staggering 7.5% increase in gonorrhoea cases, soaring from 79,268 in 2022 to 85,223 in 2023. Similarly, syphilis diagnoses have surged by 9.4%, reaching a staggering 9,513 cases—the highest number seen since 1948.
