Swansea community rallies to aid Poppy, the toy poodle, after her weeklong vigil beside her deceased owner

A heartwarming tale of loyalty and community support emerged from Swansea this week, as locals rallied around a toy poodle named Poppy. The dog, having never left her deceased owner’s side, found rescue and a new lease on life thanks to concerned neighbours and widespread generosity.

In March, 76-year-old Yolanda Callaghan passed away at her Swansea home, her absence noted only after a week of silence. Christie Powell, a neighbour, grew concerned after not seeing Callaghan for an extended period. Peering through the letterbox, Powell discovered a distressing scene: Callaghan lifeless on the floor, with Poppy, her eight-year-old toy poodle, cuddling into her. “The sight of unopened mail initially caught my eye, hinting at something amiss. Then, the grim reality hit as I saw Yolanda on the ground, with Poppy sitting atop her, a silent sentinel in her final moments,” Powell recounted.

Poppy’s condition, described as “dehydrated and malnourished,” with severe eye issues, necessitating immediate medical attention. Powell, alongside her sister Kate DiFrancesco, who had accompanied her, managed to enter the house with the help of paramedics. DiFrancesco, meeting Poppy for the first time, found the dog remarkably attached to her, showcasing the animal’s desperate need for companionship.

Upon rescue, Powell took it upon herself to nurse Poppy back to health. “We cautiously fed her, mindful of her fragile state. During her bath, Poppy’s thirst was evident as she began drinking the bathwater,” Powell explained. Veterinary care revealed a perforated ulcer in Poppy’s right eye, leading to the difficult decision to remove it. Yet, in the face of adversity, the community’s spirit shone brightly. Powell’s fundraising efforts for Poppy’s medical expenses exceeded expectations, raising over £4,000. “The operation was a success, and though Poppy, now affectionately nicknamed ‘Popeye,’ has lost an eye, she has gained a multitude of supporters,” Powell added, touched by the outpouring of support.
