Being the child of Wayne and Coleen Rooney probably makes questions about fame fairly normal. But when 13-year-old Klay Rooney was asked to settle a potentially dangerous family debate in the trailer for The Real Rooneys, he didn’t exactly struggle to pick a side.
The series is now out on Disney+, following Wayne, Coleen and their four sons through what Disney calls a pivotal year in their lives. Here’s what Klay said, what the show covers and how to watch it.

What happens in The Real Rooneys?
Wayne adjusts to life away from football management, Coleen juggles a growing career, and the family’s arguments make the cut alongside the laughs.
Wayne is shown adjusting to a very different routine involving family life and school runs. At one point he describes the house as chaotic and jokingly questions why they had children in the first place. When the prospect of more children comes up, he makes it clear that he and Coleen aren’t planning to add another member to the household.
Coleen is seen becoming emotional while discussing the pressure of balancing family life with her increasingly busy career. Her opportunities have grown since the Wagatha Christie case, which she won in 2022, and her run on I’m a Celebrity in 2024, where she finished second to Danny Jones. The series follows her as she works on new projects, including designing her own Primark range.
At home, she admits that juggling everything has been difficult and that there are times when the mood inside the house isn’t happy. The cameras also catch a tense exchange between Wayne and Coleen on a family holiday, and Wayne appears able to laugh at himself afterwards, joking about being familiar with life in the doghouse.

Yes. Kai, who turned 17 on 2 November, is a forward in Manchester United’s under-18s, in the first year of a two-year scholarship for the 2026 to 2027 season.
He’s in form, too. On 27 October he scored four goals as United’s under-18s won 6-0 at Burnley, 11 days after his under-21s debut as a substitute in a 3-2 defeat by Nottingham Forest, according to Sports Mole.
Football hasn’t disappeared from the Rooney household just because Wayne is no longer on the touchline as a manager. The series follows the family as they support Kai’s developing career, and Wayne can be seen playing football with his eldest son. It makes for an interesting dynamic, with one Rooney adjusting to life away from management while another tries to make his own way in the game.
What do the reviews say about The Real Rooneys?
Warm, if not gushing. The Guardian found it far from authentic but fun, and TheJournal.ie called it an easy, charming watch.
Jack Seale found it far from authentic, but said the family’s willingness to send themselves up makes it fun to watch.
Called it an easy watch and said the Rooneys are “ultimately very charming”, with Wayne coming across better than you might expect.
Is Wayne Rooney doing I’m A Celebrity?
Not confirmed. Wayne is on the list of 12 campmates The Sun has reported for the 2026 series, after it said on 19 September that he was in advanced talks, but neither ITV nor Rooney has confirmed it.
What ITV has confirmed is the start date. I’m A Celebrity begins on Monday 16 November at 9 pm on ITV1, STV and ITVX, which ITV announced in a video on 2 November, Capital reported. On the names, an ITV spokesperson told TV Guide that “any names suggested for I’m A Celebrity are just speculation”.
