The top seed secured a 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2 victory in a match that lasted two hours and 20 minutes, overcoming a strong challenge from the former world No. 1.
The opening set was dominated by powerful serving from both players. Opportunities to break were limited, with neither player allowing extended rallies to develop. Osaka faced the only break point of the set early on and defended it effectively.
The set moved into a tiebreak, where Osaka gained control. Sabalenka, who had been consistent in similar situations, was unable to maintain her level, and Osaka took the set.
The second set saw a shift in momentum, with both players engaging in longer rallies and more competitive games. Several games extended to multiple deuces, highlighting the intensity of the contest.
Osaka managed to break serve to take a 2-1 lead, but Sabalenka responded by maintaining consistency in key moments. Osaka dropped her serve in the following game, allowing Sabalenka to regain balance in the set.
As the set progressed, Sabalenka continued to apply pressure. She secured another break after recovering from a 40-0 deficit, moving ahead before closing out the set with strong serving.
The deciding set began with both players holding serve, but the momentum shifted decisively in Sabalenka’s favour. Osaka held for 2-1 after saving break points, but errors began to affect her performance.
Sabalenka capitalised on this change, breaking serve and extending her lead. She maintained control behind her serve, conceding only a small number of points in the final set.
The match concluded with Sabalenka securing victory, finishing with a series of strong serves and winners.
The result extends Sabalenka’s run of consecutive quarterfinal appearances on the WTA Tour. She has now reached 17 successive quarterfinals, maintaining consistency at the highest level.
Osaka’s performance showed competitiveness throughout the match, particularly in the opening set and during key moments in the second. However, she was unable to sustain her level in the final stages.
Sabalenka acknowledged the level of competition after the match, noting the quality of play from her opponent and the closeness of the contest.
Osaka also reflected on the match, stating that she felt more capable of matching Sabalenka’s power compared to previous encounters. She described the experience as a positive step despite the defeat.
Sabalenka will next face Hailey Baptiste in the quarterfinals, following Baptiste’s victory over Belinda Bencic.
