Following the success of ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun,’ Idris Elba hints at promising developments for a sequel, aspiring to establish a franchise akin to James Bond

Idris Elba, the star of ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun,’ has sparked anticipation among fans with his recent comments about the potential for a second film in the Luther series on Netflix. The first movie, which followed Detective John Luther after his dramatic prison escape to pursue a serial killer in London, has been one of Netflix’s top-streamed films since its debut.

In a recent interview with Collider, while promoting his role in the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series ‘Knuckles,’ Elba addressed the swirling rumours about a sequel. “The chances are very good actually,” Elba remarked, suggesting that the prospects for ‘old Johnny Boy’ returning to the screen are looking favourable. He quickly noted, however, that any discussions are in the preliminary stages and he is not currently working on a script.

Elba’s enthusiasm for the Luther character and the universe around it is palpable. “I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character,” he said, expressing his hope to expand the Luther series into a full-blown franchise. This ambition draws inspiration from the iconic James Bond series, hinting at a future where Luther could similarly evolve with new actors stepping into the lead role as Elba ages.

‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ ended on a tantalizing note that set the stage for further adventures, with an MI5 agent offering Luther a mysterious job after he successfully apprehends the film’s antagonist, portrayed by Andy Serkis. This ending has left fans eager for more, and Elba’s recent comments have only fueled this anticipation.

Elba believes that the success of the first film, which positioned itself as one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, sets a solid foundation for a sequel. His vision for Luther extends beyond just another movie; he sees potential for a series that enjoys the “sort of scale, that reverence” akin to the James Bond films.

As fans await official confirmation from Netflix, Elba’s hints suggest that discussions are moving in the right direction, and the beloved detective might soon return to London’s gritty streets. ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ is available for viewing on Netflix, offering both new viewers and longtime fans of the series a chance to dive into Luther’s complex world.
