Iga Swiatek continued her ruthless Italian Open form with a crushing win over Jessica Pegula

Iga Świątek delivered another terrifying statement at the Italian Open by demolishing Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-2 to storm into the semi finals in Rome.

The world No 3 needed little more than an hour to dismantle the fifth seed in a performance that sent another warning to the rest of the women’s tour ahead of the French Open.

Swiatek looked completely untouchable on clay as she overwhelmed Pegula with relentless pressure, brutal precision and supreme confidence from the opening game.

The victory continued an extraordinary resurgence for the four time French Open champion, who appears to be rediscovering the dominant form that once made her almost unbeatable on clay courts.

After crushing Naomi Osaka earlier in the tournament, Swiatek produced another one sided performance against one of the world’s most consistent players. Pegula struggled to cope with the pace, spin and intensity coming from the opposite side of the net as Swiatek tore through the match with ruthless efficiency.

The atmosphere on centre court in Rome initially carried expectations of a close contest between two elite players. Instead, it rapidly became a showcase of Swiatek’s superiority on her favourite surface.

Pegula failed to find answers as Swiatek repeatedly forced errors while dominating rallies from the baseline. The Polish star mixed heavy topspin with aggressive shot making and exceptional movement, leaving her opponent constantly under pressure.

By the closing stages, Pegula looked physically and mentally exhausted as Swiatek sealed victory with clinical ease.

The performance marked one of Swiatek’s strongest displays since winning the French Open two years ago. Despite remaining among the elite players in women’s tennis, she has spent recent months searching for consistency after several frustrating results by her own high standards.

Now, however, she suddenly looks like the player everyone feared once again.

“I feel much better,” Swiatek said after the victory. “I have a lot of confidence in my shots. I used that from the beginning of the match and kept putting pressure on Jessie. I’m really happy with how I played.”

Her confidence appears to be growing with every round in Rome.

Swiatek will next face either Elena Rybakina or Elina Svitolina in the semi finals as she attempts to win a fourth Italian Open title. A possible final showdown with reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff could still await later this week.

The timing of Swiatek’s return to top form could hardly be more significant. Roland Garros begins later this month, and the Polish star now appears to be rebuilding momentum at exactly the right moment.

Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu is preparing for her long awaited return to competition after months sidelined through illness.

The British No 1 has not played since Indian Wells in March after suffering from a post viral illness that first emerged in February. The condition forced Raducanu to withdraw from four consecutive tournaments and raised growing concerns about her fitness ahead of the clay court season.

Although she travelled to Rome and practised for the Italian Open, Raducanu eventually decided she was not ready to compete.

Now, the 23 year old is set to return at the Internationaux de Strasbourg after accepting a wildcard entry into the tournament. The event begins on Saturday and will offer Raducanu valuable preparation time before the French Open starts on 24 May.

For Swiatek, though, the spotlight in Rome belongs entirely to her.

After two crushing victories against elite opponents, the former champion suddenly looks unstoppable again.

And with the French Open rapidly approaching, the rest of the tennis world may once more be facing the terrifying reality of peak Iga Swiatek on clay.
