In a touching pre-marathon event, Boston Common witnessed a delightful gathering of golden retrievers honouring Spencer, the beloved marathon mascot and therapy dog
Boston Common transformed into a sea of gold as hundreds of golden retrievers and their owners convened for a special event dubbed “Golden Strong,” commemorating Spencer, the cherished Boston Marathon dog, and his niece Penny, both of whom succumbed to cancer last year. This poignant gathering not only celebrated their lives but also aimed to raise awareness and funds for canine cancer research.
Spencer, renowned for his steadfast presence along the marathon route with a “Boston Strong” flag in his mouth, became an iconic figure in Ashland. He was not just a mascot; he was a beacon of hope and joy for marathon runners and spectators alike. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Spencer was honoured as the official dog of the 126th Boston Marathon by race organizers, a testament to his significant impact on the community.
“Spencer totally understood what he was doing. He knew he made a difference and he enjoyed doing it,” said Rich Powers, Spencer’s owner. Spencer’s legacy extends beyond the marathon; he was also a therapy dog who visited schools and hospitals, bringing comfort to those facing their battles with cancer.
The event saw the golden retrievers donning “Golden Strong” bandanas, which were sold to benefit cancer research, with 20% of sales going towards the cause. The atmosphere was festive and familial as the dogs and their owners strolled around the historic park, enjoying the pleasant weather and each other’s company.
Participants took part in various activities, including a walk past the Massachusetts State House, abundant petting sessions, and treat distributions, making sure every golden retriever felt like a “good boy.” The day culminated in a group photo on the Common, capturing the spirit of community and remembrance that marked the occasion.
This gathering not only highlighted the bond between pets and their owners but also underscored the golden retriever community’s commitment to supporting cancer research. It was a fitting tribute to Spencer and Penny, whose spirits continue to inspire and touch the hearts of many within and beyond Boston.
