Helio Varela’s second-half goal earned Cape Verde a dramatic 2–2 draw with Uruguay
Cape Verde’s incredible World Cup journey continued with another unforgettable result as the tournament debutants fought back to earn a remarkable 2-2 draw against Uruguay.
After stunning football fans around the world by holding Spain to a goalless draw in their opening match, Cape Verde once again proved they belong on the biggest stage with a courageous performance against one of football’s traditional powers.
The small island nation, with a population of around 500,000 people, showed no fear against two-time World Cup champions Uruguay and now has a genuine opportunity to progress to the knockout stages.
Cape Verde took the lead in the 21st minute through Kevin Pina, who scored the first World Cup goal in the country’s history.
The midfielder stepped up to a free-kick from 28 yards and struck a powerful effort towards goal. Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to react in time as the ball flew past him, sparking wild celebrations among the Cape Verde supporters.
The goal came after a confident opening period from Cape Verde, who looked dangerous through the pace and skill of Garry Rodrigues.
Uruguay controlled much of the possession but struggled to turn their dominance into clear chances until the closing moments of the first half.
Their equaliser arrived in the 44th minute after Rodrigo Bentancur’s header struck the post and fell perfectly for Maximiliano Araújo, who headed home from close range.
Just moments later, Uruguay completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time.
A header from Araújo dropped to Agustín Canobbio, who had been left unmarked inside the area and finished comfortably to give Marcelo Bielsa’s side a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Despite falling behind, Cape Verde refused to surrender.
Their determination was rewarded in the 61st minute following a costly mistake in the Uruguay defence.
Mathías Olivera played a misplaced ball across his own goal, while Muslera was caught out of position. Helio Varela reacted quickest and calmly placed the ball into the net to restore parity.
It was Varela’s first international goal, and it could prove to be one of the most important moments in Cape Verde’s football history.
The dramatic result leaves Uruguay under serious pressure heading into their final Group H match against Spain.
Uruguay had already failed to defeat Saudi Arabia earlier in the tournament, and they now face a difficult challenge against the group favourites, knowing their World Cup future is uncertain.
After the match, Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa criticised his team’s organisation and admitted they had created a chaotic contest.
He said Uruguay had taken risks while attacking and accepted that his side could have either won or lost the match. Although he believes his squad has greater quality than Cape Verde, Bielsa stressed that superiority must be demonstrated on the pitch.
The manager also confirmed that Ronald Araújo would not return from injury for the crucial encounter with Spain.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde head coach Bubista celebrated another historic achievement and insisted his players would continue fighting for qualification.
He said the team had arrived at the tournament with the ambition of achieving a new dream by reaching the second round.
With a draw against Spain and another against Uruguay, Cape Verde have become one of the stories of the World Cup.
Their fearless approach, resilience and ability to compete against football’s biggest names have captured the imagination of supporters across the globe.
They now head into their final group game against Saudi Arabia knowing that another positive result could complete one of the greatest underdog stories in World Cup history.
