Haaland goal sends City top as Burnley relegated after Turf Moor defeat

Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, a result that also confirmed the home side’s relegation.

Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the game after just five minutes, breaking through the Burnley defence to give his side an early lead. It marked a fast and decisive start for City, who looked set to build on their advantage.

Early chances followed, with Rayan Cherki seeing his effort pushed onto the crossbar. Haaland also struck the woodwork later in the match, highlighting City’s repeated attempts to extend their lead.

Despite registering 28 shots, City were unable to score a second goal. Their early intensity did not continue, and the match became more tense as it progressed. The performance lacked the same level of control seen in their recent win over Arsenal.

Burnley responded after the early setback and worked to contain City for much of the game. They prevented further goals and remained in contention, particularly as the match entered its later stages.

In the closing moments, City had another opportunity to secure a second goal. Nico O’Reilly missed from close range, failing to convert a late chance.

The result lifts Manchester City above Arsenal on goals scored, with both teams level on points. City have now scored three more goals this season, placing them at the top of the table with five games remaining.

For Burnley, the defeat confirms their relegation to the Championship. The team has won just one of their last 25 league matches and has been unable to maintain their position in the top flight after earning promotion with 100 points in the previous season.

The match also reflected a contrast in outcomes. City achieved the result needed to lead the title race, while Burnley’s season ended with their return to the second tier.
