The UK faces a dangerous freeze: Temperatures drop to -17.3C and may plunge further

Altnaharra in the highlands records -17.3C, the coldest January night since 2010, with warnings of more extreme temperatures

The UK has experienced its chilliest January night in 15 years, as temperatures plummeted to a bone-chilling -17.3C in Altnaharra, located in Sutherland, the northernmost region of the Highlands. By 9pm on Friday, this stark low marked the coldest overnight temperature for January since 2010, when freezing conditions saw temperatures dip below -15C across several locations, including a record -22.3C in Altnaharra on 8 January that year.

The cold snap is far from over, with forecasters predicting that temperatures could continue to drop throughout the weekend, potentially reaching as low as -20C in some areas. The extreme cold has led to an amber health alert being extended across England until Tuesday. The UK Health Security Agency issued a warning, emphasising the serious health risks posed by these conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

“Cold weather can have a severe impact on the health of vulnerable people,” said the agency, urging people to check on elderly friends, family, and neighbours who may be at greater risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections due to the freezing temperatures.

The cold snap has also prompted yellow warnings for ice across much of the country, including in the south-west, Wales, Northern Ireland, northern Scotland, and along the east coast from Northumberland to Essex. As these icy conditions set in, the Met Office has advised caution for those venturing outdoors, particularly in the form of frost and icy patches that are expected to form overnight.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick said, “It’s going to be another cold couple of days, with recovery into early next week. Temperatures will continue to dip below freezing, and severe frost and ice are likely to form overnight.” Eslick further warned that snow is expected across Dartmoor and Exmoor, with possible snow showers in northern Scotland and the north-east of England on Friday.

The freezing rain, combined with subzero temperatures, could turn roads and paths treacherously icy, particularly on already cold ground. The Met Office has urged caution for those planning to travel, advising motorists to take extra care and to prepare for hazardous conditions.

However, the forecast also suggests some respite, with clear, bright skies likely to appear in areas away from freezing fog. While conditions may remain settled, travellers and residents alike must be vigilant, as temperatures continue their relentless drop.

For many, the cold temperatures will be a reminder of the power of winter’s grip on the UK, with ongoing health warnings and dangerous conditions across the country. With the weather showing no sign of letting up, staying warm and safe has never been more crucial.
