Sony develops 24 Jump Street with key cast members reportedly in talks to return

The Jump Street franchise is preparing for another mission, with Sony Pictures developing a new instalment that could reunite some of the series’ biggest stars.

A fresh report has confirmed that 24 Jump Street is officially in development, marking the latest chapter in the hit comedy franchise that helped transform Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum into one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy duos.

Hill, Tatum and Ice Cube are currently in talks to return for the new film, although no deals have been officially announced. Their potential involvement has already generated excitement among fans who have waited more than a decade for another entry in the series.

The original 21 Jump Street, released in 2012, surprised audiences with its blend of action, comedy and self-aware humour. Based on the television series of the same name, the film followed two underachieving police officers who went undercover at a high school.

Its success led to the release of 22 Jump Street in 2014, which became an even bigger box office hit and earned praise for cleverly poking fun at the idea of movie sequels while delivering plenty of laughs.

Now, the franchise appears ready to continue.

Award-winning filmmaker Rodney Rothman is set to direct the project. Rothman, who won an Academy Award for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Jonah Hill and writer Meghan Malloy.

Rothman is no stranger to the franchise. He previously contributed to the script for 22 Jump Street, giving him a strong connection to the world and characters that made the films so popular.

Behind the scenes, familiar names are once again taking key roles.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the creative team that directed both previous Jump Street films, are returning as producers. While they will not direct the new instalment, their continued involvement is expected to help maintain the tone and style that defined the earlier movies.

Veteran producer Neal H. Moritz is also back on board, alongside several other long-time collaborators connected to the franchise.

Hill will produce through Strong Baby Productions with partner Matt Dines, while Tatum is producing through Free Association alongside Reid Carolin.

Despite confirmation that the project is moving forward, Sony has revealed very little about the story.

No plot details have been announced, leaving fans guessing about where the undercover officers could find themselves next. The previous films built much of their appeal around placing the characters in increasingly ridiculous situations while parodying action movie conventions.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the project has little to do with the story itself.

Many fans quickly noticed the title 24 Jump Street and wondered what happened to 23 Jump Street.

The unusual jump in numbering has sparked curiosity online, particularly because the franchise has often embraced meta-humour and jokes about sequel culture.

A possible explanation appeared in a social media post shared by producer Neal H. Moritz. An image showing the screenplay’s title page included a message that read: “It took so long to make, we had to skip one.”

The comment appears to acknowledge the lengthy gap between films while leaning into the self-referential humour that helped define the franchise.

Since the release of 22 Jump Street, numerous ideas for future sequels and spin-offs have surfaced, but none have ultimately reached production. Over the years, reports emerged about various concepts, including crossover projects and alternative storylines, though those plans never materialised.

Now, with a script in development, a director attached and major cast members considering a return, 24 Jump Street appears closer to becoming a reality than any previous attempt.

For fans of the franchise, the latest update signals that one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy series may finally be preparing for another undercover assignment.
