A heart-wrenching moment in court as a grieving husband extends forgiveness to the woman responsible for his wife’s death
In a poignant display of compassion, Terence Dermody, the widowed husband of 75-year-old Patricia Dermody, who tragically lost her life in a car accident, has publicly forgiven the driver, Julie Parkin, 58, who was responsible for the incident. The accident occurred in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, in December 2021, when Parkin, while driving her grandchildren to McDonald’s, accidentally hit Mrs. Dermody at a pedestrian crossing.
At a recent court hearing, Parkin, a voluntary church worker, tearfully apologized to the Dermody family, expressing her deep regret and sorrow for the tragic accident. In a remarkable display of empathy, Mr. Dermody responded by stating, “I forgive you,” acknowledging the pain and remorse that Parkin must be feeling.

The court took into account the family’s forgiveness and Parkin’s remorse, recognizing that she would have to live with the consequences of her actions.
In a statement, Mr. Dermody expressed that his family holds no malice towards Parkin, understanding that she too is suffering from the tragedy. He commended her for staying at the scene and helping as much as she could after the accident. Parkin, who is from Greenfield, near Oldham, was also banned from driving for two years, ordered to undergo 15 days of rehabilitation activity, and instructed to pay £239 in costs and surcharge.
The courtroom scene serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of forgiveness and compassion, even in the face of profound loss and tragedy. The Dermody family’s act of forgiveness towards Parkin is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the healing power of empathy and understanding.
