A recently married couple, both 26, had an unexpected turn on their wedding night, finding themselves in the hospital. The incident unfolded during their wedding reception at a historical Covent in Pistoia, Italy, dating back to the early 15th century. Chaos ensued when a section of the floor suddenly collapsed, causing injuries to numerous guests.

The aftermath revealed a significant hole in the venue’s floor, leading to the closure of the convent after 35 individuals, including a child, suffered injuries. Among the victims, six sustained serious injuries, while 10 were classified as ‘moderate.’ All those affected sought medical attention at the San Jacopo Hospital in Pistoia, with three individuals, including a pregnant woman, still under hospital care the following day, albeit in stable condition.

The collapse happened as guests descended from what was once the refectory, amidst rubble, debris, and wooden planks. The father of the groom expressed shock, recounting the moment of panic and the search for those who had fallen. A criminal case has been initiated against unidentified individuals, charging them with negligent bodily harm and omission of necessary work to remove dangers. Investigators suspect structural failure as the primary cause of the floor collapse.

This incident brings to mind a similar mishap in 2021 when a bride sued an award-winning wedding venue for £150,000. The unfortunate accident occurred on the venue’s hi-tech ‘twinkling dance floor,’ resulting in a broken elbow. The bride alleged that staff neglected to prevent drinks from being taken onto the LED-lit laminated plastic floor, contrary to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
