Civil police volunteer Sanjay Roy faces charges in the brutal case involving the death of a female doctor at Kolkata’s R. G. Kar Medical College

The trial in the tragic rape and murder case of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital began on November 11, 2024, at the Sealdah court. This marks a significant step in the judicial process almost three months after the shocking incident that has sparked widespread protests and calls for justice.

The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civil police volunteer, has been charged with the rape and murder of a female doctor. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and insisted that he is being framed. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed the charge sheet in October 2024, detailing the allegations against Roy, and charges were officially framed earlier this month.

The trial is being conducted behind closed doors in an in-camera session at the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. The proceedings are closely followed by the media, given the high public interest in the case, especially after the incident prompted a wave of protests from junior doctors and medical staff across the city.

On October 30, 2024, the victim, a young woman medic, was found dead under suspicious circumstances within the hospital premises. The brutal crime led to an outpouring of grief and anger from the medical community. Junior doctors organized a torch rally towards the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in protest, demanding swift justice for the victim. The incident also brought attention to the issue of safety within medical institutions, with many calling for stronger security measures.

Roy’s arrest and the subsequent investigation by the CBI have drawn significant attention, especially as the case involves an alleged perpetrator with connections to the police force. As the trial progresses, both the prosecution and defense will present their arguments, with the medical community and the public closely monitoring the case, hoping for justice for the victim.
