Celebrated WNBA veteran to lead Indianapolis parade, emphasizing community and youth empowerment

Indianapolis has chosen Tamika Catchings, the renowned former Indiana Fever star and community leader, as the Grand Marshal for the 2024 AES 500 Festival Parade. Catchings, who retired from the WNBA as its second all-time leading scorer, continues to inspire through her substantial contributions to youth and community development.

Catchings’ illustrious career spanned 16 seasons with the Indiana Fever, during which she earned ten WNBA All-Star selections and secured four Olympic gold medals. Her championship victory with the Fever remains a highlight of her career. Following her retirement, Catchings didn’t step back from the limelight but instead shifted her focus towards her passion for youth empowerment through her Catch the Stars Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to fostering fitness, literacy, and personal development among young people.

Expressing her gratitude for the appointment, Catchings shared, “It’s an honour to be selected as the 2024 AES 500 Festival Parade Grand Marshal. To showcase the achievements that I’ve worked so hard for is truly something special. I’m proud to highlight my career and the Catch the Stars Foundation while encouraging children that they can achieve any goal they put their mind to.”

Bob Bryant, president and CEO of the 500 Festival, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing Catchings’ role as a beacon of perseverance and dedication. “Tamika Catchings is not just a sports icon; she is a symbol of overcoming adversity and committing to the greater good. Her story and her ongoing work with the Catch the Stars Foundation are truly inspirational. We are thrilled to have her lead this year’s parade.”

The AES 500 Festival Parade is a cornerstone event in Indianapolis, celebrating the city’s rich cultural and sports heritage. It draws families and community members together in celebration of iconic local and national figures. This year, the parade is set to begin at noon on May 25, with tickets available now at the official Festival website.

In related news, the Indiana Fever announced a new partnership with Lilly, which will see the pharmaceutical giant featured as a jersey patch partner.
