Moreover, Dr. Porter recommends practical measures to reduce contact with allergens. Keeping car windows closed and using air conditioning to circulate internal air can help, as can wearing glasses or sunglasses outdoors. For those engaged in activities like gardening, wearing a face mask might be necessary, especially for those with a history of severe reactions.

After outdoor exposure, cleaning up is just as crucial. “Washing your face and hands, or even showering and changing clothes, can prevent allergens from spreading inside your home,” says Dr. Porter. Additionally, leaving shoes at the door and wiping down pets after walks can further limit indoor allergen levels.

For persistent or severe symptoms, Dr. Porter emphasizes the importance of consulting a healthcare provider. “Professional guidance is crucial to determine whether symptoms are due to allergies or another condition that requires different treatment,” she notes.
