Matt Damon leads a star-studded cast in Christopher Nolan’s thrilling reimagining of The Odyssey
In The Odyssey, the latest epic from director Christopher Nolan, Matt Damon takes on the role of the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in a film that promises to be every bit as grand and intricate as its source material. The new trailer for the highly anticipated blockbuster offers a first glimpse into the perilous journey Odysseus will undertake in a quest to return home after the fall of Troy—a mission that will span a decade and bring him face-to-face with gods, monsters, and men.
Damon, who has a history of playing characters caught in long and arduous journeys, brings his experience to the role of Odysseus, a man determined to reunite with his wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (played by Tom Holland). The film is set to explore the hero’s epic journey home to Ithaca, filled with perilous encounters, from the dreaded cyclops to the fury of the gods themselves.
Charlize Theron joins the cast as Calypso, the seductive nymph who questions Odysseus about his past. In a pivotal scene from the trailer, she asks, “What do you remember of your life?” as Odysseus reflects on his family and his wartime triumph. Yet, standing between Odysseus and his family are numerous obstacles, including the villainous Antinous, played by Robert Pattinson, whose attempts to woo Penelope will add another layer of drama and tension to the plot.
In addition to Damon and Pattinson, The Odyssey boasts an ensemble cast that includes John Leguizamo as Odysseus’s loyal servant Eumaeus, Jon Bernthal as the Greek king Menelaus, and Zendaya as the goddess Athena. Other stars include Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Mia Goth as Melantho, and Jimmy Gonzales as Cepheus. Notably, Lupita Nyong’o and Will Yun Lee round out the cast in undisclosed roles.
Set for release on 17 July 2026, The Odyssey will be available in IMAX, with the stunning visuals and elaborate action sequences set to transport audiences on Odysseus’s 10-year journey. As the trailer teases, this promises to be a cinematic experience filled with mythological grandeur and high-stakes adventure, blending Nolan’s signature storytelling with a rich Greek mythological narrative.
