Lake-effect snow Eastern US: Frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall create hazardous conditions

A punishing Arctic air mass has descended on the eastern United States, bringing frigid temperatures and dangerous lake-effect snow conditions that are impacting millions of residents. The cold snap, which stretches from the northern Plains to the East Coast, marks the coldest weather since last winter, with temperatures dropping 15 to 25 degrees below seasonal averages.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter weather alerts for nearly 10 million people, as snow accumulations ranging from 6 to 12 inches are expected across the Great Lakes region. However, in narrow snow bands, totals could reach a staggering 4 to 6 feet by the end of the weekend. Jefferson County, New York, remains under a state of emergency, with Watertown bracing for up to 70 inches of snow by Monday.

Wind chills as low as -40 degrees in North Dakota and Minnesota pose severe risks of frostbite and hypothermia. Major cities, including Chicago, Indianapolis, and Atlanta, are experiencing temperatures reminiscent of mid-January. Nearly 70% of the U.S. population will face sub-freezing conditions over the coming days, further amplifying the weather’s disruptive effects.

Travel disruptions have been widespread, with sections of major highways like Interstate 90 closed in New York and Pennsylvania. Whiteout conditions caused by heavy snowfall have led to treacherous driving situations, leaving some motorists stranded in snowdrifts. In Erie, Pennsylvania, state police have been rescuing drivers trapped in the accumulating snow since Friday.

Despite the brutal conditions, some semblance of normalcy continues. The Buffalo Bills are preparing to host the San Francisco 49ers at Highmark Stadium on Sunday. Local officials predict that up to 30 inches of snow could fall at the stadium by game time, but Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has reassured fans that the game will proceed as planned. Meanwhile, the Bills have called on fans to help clear the snow from the stadium.

As the Arctic chill persists, residents are urged to exercise caution, especially in areas experiencing extreme wind chills and heavy snow. The prolonged weather event highlights the challenges of winter’s early arrival, impacting travel, daily life, and safety across the region.
