Police investigate historical assault claim as Katy Perry denies allegations
Police in Melbourne are investigating allegations that pop star Katy Perry sexually assaulted Australian actor Ruby Rose at a nightclub more than a decade ago, claims that Perry has strongly denied.
Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are examining a reported historical incident said to have taken place in 2010 at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s central business district.
Authorities have provided limited details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, but acknowledged they had been informed of the alleged incident.
The allegations were made public earlier this week when Ruby Rose shared claims on social media, stating that the incident occurred at the Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne. The post quickly drew widespread attention, prompting responses from both parties.
Katy Perry has firmly rejected the accusations. In a statement issued through a representative, the singer described the claims as “categorically false” and labelled them “dangerous, reckless lies”.
The statement also referenced what it described as a history of similar public allegations made by Rose, which have been denied by those previously named.
Representatives for both Perry and Rose have been approached for further comment.
Ruby Rose later indicated that she had taken formal steps to report the matter to the police. In a follow-up message, she stated that she had completed all necessary reports and would no longer be able to discuss the case publicly while the investigation is ongoing.
She described the process as part of moving forward and beginning a period of personal healing.
The alleged incident dates back to August 2010, when both Perry and Rose were reported to have attended events in Melbourne, including a visit to the Spice Market nightclub, located within the Grand Hyatt complex. At the time, media reports noted Perry’s presence in the city and her appearance at various venues.
The case now centres on claims from more than a decade ago, which present particular challenges for investigators. Historical allegations often rely heavily on witness accounts and any available supporting evidence, which can be difficult to obtain after such a long period.
Victoria Police have emphasised that no further details will be disclosed while inquiries continue.
The situation has drawn significant public interest due to the high-profile nature of those involved. Perry is one of the world’s most recognisable pop artists, with a global career spanning more than a decade, while Rose is a well-known actor and public figure.
As the investigation progresses, authorities will assess the information provided to determine whether further action is warranted.
At this stage, no charges have been announced, and the matter remains under investigation.
The case highlights the complexities involved in addressing historical allegations, particularly when they involve prominent individuals and events that occurred many years earlier.
For now, both sides have set out their positions clearly: one asserting serious allegations, the other firmly denying them.
With police now formally involved, the focus shifts to the investigative process, which will determine the next steps in a case that has rapidly moved from social media claims to a formal criminal inquiry.
