BJP-led alliance maintains lead in India’s seven-phase election; Rahul Gandhi leads in Rae Bareli

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance is leading as India counts votes after a mammoth seven-phase election. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi leads by more than 11,000 votes in Rae Bareli, a key seat in Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in nearby Amethi in 2019, a seat he held since 2004.
