Netflix has confirmed a third Inbetweeners film with all four original leads and both creators. Filming has begun, but no release date has been set

A third Inbetweeners film is happening. Netflix confirmed on Monday that The Inbetweeners 3 is in production, with all four original leads returning.

Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison are all back as Will, Simon, Jay and Neil. Series creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are writing the film and directing it themselves, for the first time.

Filming is already under way in the UK.

No release date has been announced, and Netflix has given away nothing about the plot.

The confirmation ends more than a decade of speculation, and it arrives two years after Bird told an interviewer there were no prospects of a reunion at all.

Is there going to be an Inbetweeners 3?

Yes. It is confirmed, and it is being filmed now.

Netflix announced the film on 7 September 2026, describing it as officially in production rather than in development.

That distinction matters, because the project has been reported as “in development” or “being discussed” several times over the past decade without anything happening.

This time the cameras are rolling.

What happens in the Inbetweeners 3 teaser?

The teaser gives away almost nothing, and that appears to be deliberate.

It opens on the yellow Fiat Cinquecento being uncovered in a garage. The four approach the car and get in. Simon tries the ignition, struggles with it, and eventually pulls away.

The clip ends with the number 3 written in the dirt on the rear window.

There is no dialogue, no plot and no indication of where the characters are in their lives.

Who is in the cast of Inbetweeners 3?

All four leads are confirmed.

Simon Bird returns as Will McKenzie, Joe Thomas as Simon Cooper, James Buckley as Jay Cartwright and Blake Harrison as Neil Sutherland.

Netflix has not announced anyone else. The original series had a substantial supporting cast, including Greg Davies as Mr Gilbert and Emily Atack as Charlotte Hinchcliffe, but none of them has been confirmed.

When is Inbetweeners 3 coming out?

No release date has been announced.

Filming began on 7 September 2026, which makes 2027 the realistic expectation rather than anything this year, though Netflix has not committed to a window.

Some social media posts have circulated a September 2026 date. There is no basis for it, and the film only started shooting this week.

How old are the Inbetweeners characters now?

Netflix has not said, and the answer shapes what the film can be.

The E4 series began in 2008 with the four in the lower sixth, which put them around 17. The first film left them at roughly 18 in 2011. On that timeline, the characters would now be in their mid-thirties.

The actors are older still. Bird is 42, Thomas is 42, Harrison is 41, and Buckley, always the youngest, is 39.

Both previous films moved with them, from a post-A-level holiday in Malia to a gap-year trip around Australia. A third has to find something for four men in middle age, and the teaser offers no clue what that is beyond the car.

Didn’t the cast rule out a third film?

They did, repeatedly, and Simon Bird was the most direct about it.

Speaking in September 2024, Bird said there were “no prospects of a reunion”, explaining that Morris and Beesley were “very busy these days” and adding: “It’s not more likely to happen now than it was ten years ago.”

He went further in the same period, saying he had not revisited the show at all. “I don’t watch myself back; I can’t remember the show. I don’t think I’ve even watched it back since I made it in 2008.”

James Buckley took a warmer line the following month. “I love it. It’s a two-way thing; I enjoy it as much as them,” he said, adding that the show still made him laugh.

Two years on, Bird is filming it.

What have the Inbetweeners cast done since?

The idea that the four went their separate ways is not quite right. Three of them have kept working together for years.

Joe Thomas and Simon Bird co-created and co-wrote the Sky sitcom Chickens with Jonny Sweet. Thomas and Buckley then spent three series together on the BBC Two comedy White Gold between 2017 and 2019. And since September 2025, Thomas and Buckley have hosted a podcast together, Joe and James Fact Up.

Individually, Bird has moved substantially behind the camera. He starred in Friday Night Dinner for nine years, currently appears in Everyone Else Burns, and has built a second career as a director, making his feature debut with Days of the Bagnold Summer in 2020 and directing Such Brave Girls. He has co-founded two production companies.

Thomas appeared in Fresh Meat across five series and more recently in the drama Maternal.

Buckley has become one of the more successful British actors on YouTube, running the gaming channel Completed It Mate since 2016 to more than 400,000 subscribers, alongside television work including the Channel 5 drama Finders Keepers.

Blake Harrison has had the most conventional acting run of the four, with parts in The Great, Doctor Who, I Hate Suzie, Still Up and Maigret.

Who is writing and directing Inbetweeners 3?

Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, who created the show, are writing the film and directing it together.

That is a change. They wrote both previous films, but Ben Palmer directed the first and the pair shared directing duties on the second.

Their statement was in keeping with the tone of the show. “It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.”

Where is Inbetweeners 3 being filmed?

In the United Kingdom, though Netflix has not named locations.

Both earlier films took the characters abroad. The Inbetweeners Movie sent them to Malia in Crete, and The Inbetweeners 2 was set largely in Australia.

A UK shoot does not rule out foreign filming later, and Netflix has not said whether the story stays in Britain.

What happened in the first two Inbetweeners films?

Both were enormous, and the second was bigger than the first.

The Inbetweeners Movie was released on 17 August 2011. Made for around £3.5 million, it took roughly $88 million worldwide and set the record for the biggest opening weekend for a comedy in the UK at £13.22 million, beating Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and The Hangover Part II.

The Inbetweeners 2 followed on 6 August 2014. It took £2.75 million on its opening day, the highest first-day figure for a comedy in British cinema history, and £12.5 million across its opening weekend, the largest opening of any film released in the UK that year. It finished on £33.3 million domestically and $63.8 million worldwide, and was the highest-grossing British film in the UK market in 2014.

Netflix has not said what the third film is about, how old the characters are meant to be, or where it takes them. For now the only firm information is that all four are back, both creators are behind the camera for the first time, the Cinquecento has been dug out of a garage, and the cameras are already turning.
