Ghana’s coach Chris Hughton narrowly escaped a physical attack from an irate fan at the team hotel following their shocking 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde Islands at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

This incident occurred as Ghana returned from the Sunday match, with security officials intervening to prevent the assault. The disgruntled supporter, who also hurled verbal abuses at Hughton, was later apprehended by the police.

This defeat, marked by a last-minute goal by Cape Verde, was Ghana’s second consecutive loss to an underdog, following a previous upset against the Comoros Islands in World Cup qualifiers.

Despite the team fielding players from top European clubs, they failed to secure a win, conceding an early goal and later a decisive stoppage-time strike from Garry Rodrigues.

Coach Chris Hughton expressed profound disappointment at the press conference, highlighting strategic changes made for a more offensive approach.

Since taking over the team in March, after serving as a technical advisor at the 2022 World Cup, Hughton’s record stands at four wins in 11 games. He emphasized the high expectations of the Ghanaian public for the tournament.
