A cautionary tale: Understanding radicalization and national security
In a bid to raise public awareness, it has come to light that Shamima Begum, a former member of the Islamic State (ISIS), was stripped of her British citizenship five years ago. This decision was made following her departure from the UK at the tender age of 15 to join the notorious terrorist organization ISIS.
Begum’s journey to Syria alongside two school friends from Bethnal Green Academy shocked the nation back in 2015. Ignoring warnings from her family about the dangers of Syria, Shamima Begum ventured into the heart of conflict, where she eventually married a Dutch-born ISIS member, Yago Riedijk.
Despite bearing three children with Riedijk, all of whom tragically perished, Begum’s association with ISIS led to her citizenship being revoked by the UK government. She was deemed a threat to national security and banned from returning to the UK.
Despite her efforts to appeal the decision, including a challenge in the Supreme Court, Begum’s citizenship remains revoked. Her recent attempts to overturn the ruling by highlighting her potential status as a trafficking victim have not yielded success.
