A tragic case of neglect and alleged abuse has shocked the community of Daytona Beach, Florida, as Talia Nelson, 43, faces severe charges following the death of her 14-year-old son, Zayke Smith-Nelson. The boy was found dead, weighing only 33 pounds (2 stone 3), revealing a disturbing case of alleged neglect and starvation.
The investigation, conducted by the Daytona Beach police, uncovered harrowing details of neglect and abuse leading to Zayke’s untimely death. Nelson reportedly failed to seek medical help for her son, acknowledging that she had “dropped the ball” in caring for him.

Upon arrival, police discovered Zayke unresponsive, with visible signs of severe malnutrition and extensive bedsores. Despite efforts to save him, the teenager tragically succumbed to his injuries at Halifax Health Medical Center.
A search of the three-bedroom apartment revealed appalling living conditions, with a room devoid of furniture and reeking of urine. The floor was strewn with soiled clothes and toys, and bugs crawled on the walls and floor throughout the apartment.
Further investigation uncovered a history of neglect and abuse, with medical records indicating that Zayke had not received proper medical attention for three years, despite previously being in good health. The teen bore scars consistent with sustained physical abuse, indicating a pattern of mistreatment.
Dr. Ruth Kohlmeier of the Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that Zayke’s death was a result of neglect and abuse, ruling it a homicide. Detectives affirmed that Nelson’s actions directly led to her son’s tragic demise.
