Stephen Eustaquio’s late goal seals Canada’s place in the World Cup knockout stage after a tense battle
Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 in dramatic fashion after Stephen Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa.
The co-hosts looked destined for extra time after struggling to break down a determined South African defence, but Eustaquio produced the decisive moment in the 92nd minute to send the home supporters into celebration and keep Canada’s World Cup dream alive.
South Africa frustrated Canada throughout the contest with a disciplined defensive display, limiting clear-cut opportunities while remaining organised under constant pressure. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams also played a key role, producing a composed performance that kept his side in the match for almost the entire 90 minutes.
Canada dominated possession from the opening whistle and created the better chances, but they repeatedly found South Africa standing firm.
One of the closest moments arrived when Moïse Bombito rose highest to meet a delivery into the penalty area. His powerful header appeared destined for the net before Aubrey Modiba produced a brilliant goal-line clearance to preserve the deadlock.
Jonathan David was also denied what looked like a certain goal. As the striker prepared to head into an open net, Mbekezeli Mbokazi made a perfectly timed challenge to prevent the breakthrough, underlining South Africa’s resilience.
The first half also featured a controversial penalty appeal. Richie Laryea went to ground inside the penalty area following a challenge from Khuliso Mudau, prompting loud appeals from the Canadian players and supporters.
The referee allowed play to continue before the incident was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee. After examining the replay, officials concluded that Mudau had made contact with the ball before colliding with Laryea, resulting in the original decision being upheld.
The verdict sparked frustration on the Canadian bench. Head coach Jesse Marsch reacted angrily as the teams headed towards the dressing rooms and had to be calmed by several of his own players before the situation escalated further.
Despite the disappointment, Canada returned after the break with renewed determination.
Wave after wave of attacks continued throughout the second half, yet South Africa remained difficult to break down. Williams organised his defence superbly, while the back line continued to block shots and clear dangerous deliveries into the area.
As full time approached, the match appeared destined for extra time. South Africa looked increasingly confident that their disciplined approach would earn another opportunity to fight for progression, while Canada’s growing frustration became evident with every missed chance.
Then came the decisive moment.
Deep into stoppage time, Stephen Eustaquio controlled the ball inside the penalty area with an excellent first touch before striking a composed half-volley beyond Williams and into the far corner. The finish finally ended South Africa’s stubborn resistance and sparked emotional celebrations among Canada’s players and supporters.
The winning goal transformed the atmosphere instantly. Players rushed towards Eustaquio as the stadium erupted, knowing the strike had secured Canada’s place in the knockout rounds.
At the final whistle, Jesse Marsch praised the determination shown by his squad after they continued believing until the final moments.
Addressing his players, Marsch hailed their achievement, describing them as heroes for Canadian football and telling them their performance would inspire future generations across the country.
The victory makes Canada the first nation to confirm its place in the World Cup last 16 from this stage of the competition. The co-hosts will now prepare for a challenging knockout fixture against either Morocco or the Netherlands in Houston on 4 July.
Although South Africa exits the tournament with disappointment, the team’s defensive organisation and commitment earned widespread admiration. They frustrated one of the tournament hosts for almost the entire match and came within moments of forcing extra time.
For Canada, however, patience ultimately paid off. After dominating much of the contest without reward, Eustaquio’s late intervention ensured the co-hosts’ World Cup campaign continues, giving them fresh belief as they prepare for the biggest match of their tournament so far.
