Described by experts as possessing ‘tiny needles’ that inflict searing pain upon contact, the Gympie-Gympie plant induces paralysing agony lasting up to half an hour, with lingering discomfort persisting for months. Despite its terrifying attributes, this botanical aberration finds itself among the macabre collection of over 100 toxic plants at Alnwick Garden, a brainchild of Jane Percy, the Duchess of Northumberland. In her quest to revitalise the grounds of Alnwick Castle, Percy envisioned the garden as an educational tool, aiming to captivate children’s imaginations with the sinister secrets of nature.

Reflecting on her ambitious project, Percy remarked, “Children don’t care that aspirin comes from the bark of a tree… What’s really interesting is to know how a plant kills you, and how the patient dies, and what you feel like before you die.”
