Deobra Redden, 30, charged with attempted murder following viral courtroom assault

In a shocking turn of events, the man who gained notoriety for attacking a judge during a sentencing hearing has now been charged with attempted murder. Deobra Redden, 30, made headlines last month after a video surfaced showing him assaulting Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a hearing in Las Vegas.

The incident occurred as Judge Holthus was about to sentence Redden for an attempted battery offence on January 3rd. Despite Redden’s plea for leniency, Judge Holthus was in the process of denying the request when Redden launched himself over the bench and attacked her, uttering profanities as he did so. Court ushers intervened to restrain Redden, and he was later sentenced to four years in prison for the initial charge.

Now, Redden faces new charges stemming from the assault on Judge Holthus. A grand jury indictment on February 8th included a charge of attempted murder, alleging that Redden grabbed the judge, pulled her hair, placed his hands around her throat, and hit her on the head. Additionally, Redden is accused of assaulting a Las Vegas police officer during the incident.

Redden’s family has stated that he suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but court records indicate that he was deemed fit to stand trial. His criminal history includes convictions for multiple felonies and misdemeanours, many of which involve violent acts.

The assault left Judge Holthus sore and stiff, but thankful that her injuries were not more severe. Other court personnel, including Marshall Shane Brandon and law clerk Michael Lasso, also sustained injuries during the altercation.

Clark County Chief Judge Jerry Wiese described the incident as unprecedented, emphasizing the gravity of Redden’s actions in “Supermanning over a judicial bench.”

Redden’s arraignment is scheduled for February 29th, as he faces serious charges that could have significant legal consequences.
