Three million iPhone users receive compensation as apple commences payouts in $500 million settlement

Apple has initiated payments to iPhone users who accused the tech giant of intentionally slowing down their devices. The controversy dates back to 2017 when some users noticed performance issues after installing specific software updates. Apple defended its actions, citing the need to optimize device performance and prolong battery life. However, the lack of clear communication led to three million users filing a class action lawsuit.

In a settlement reached in 2020, Apple agreed to pay $500 million to affected iPhone users to avoid prolonged legal battles. While the company maintained its innocence, the settlement acknowledged the users’ claims. The payout, now confirmed at $500 million, is being distributed to eligible users, surpassing the initially predicted $25 per person. Recent reports indicate that some recipients have received around $92.17 each.

To qualify for compensation, users must have owned affected iPhone models running specific iOS versions and submitted a claim by October 2020. The settlement covers various iPhone models, including iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus.

While this settlement resolves the issue for U.S. residents, a similar lawsuit seeking £1.6 billion in compensation is underway in the UK, ensuring that iPhone users on both sides of the Atlantic are addressed.
