Nothing extends software support to six years, but limits major android updates to three, lagging behind rivals like google and Samsung.

Nothing has officially unveiled its Phone (3a) series, bringing a mix of affordability, unique design, and long-term software support. However, while Nothing is offering six years of updates—the longest in its history—the company is only committing to three years of Android OS upgrades, a move that stands in contrast to industry trends.

In recent years, Android manufacturers have improved their long-term software commitments. Google set a new benchmark with the Pixel 8 series, promising seven years of updates. Samsung has followed suit, offering the same length of support for its flagship Galaxy S25. Even Honor has jumped on the trend, pledging seven years of updates for its latest premium devices.

The Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro, starting at $379, are more budget-friendly than these flagships. They retain Nothing’s signature minimalist aesthetic, a clean software experience, and the distinctive Glyph interface. The new models also introduce an “Essential Key,” a button designed to quickly access notes and ideas.

Despite the six-year update promise, Nothing’s approach differs from competitors. Many brands now match security updates with OS upgrades, ensuring longevity. Samsung, for example, offers six years of both security and Android updates on its mid-range Galaxy A-series. By contrast, Nothing’s choice to split OS and security updates feels outdated, leaving users with only three years of new Android versions.

Launching with Android 15, the Phone (3a) is expected to receive upgrades up to Android 18, while security patches will continue for another three years. While this is better than what many budget phones offer, Nothing may need to rethink its strategy if it wants to compete with industry leaders on software longevity.

The Nothing Phone (3a) series begins shipping later this month.
