Nine beaches shut as council investigates grey/white, marble-sized material washed ashore

The Northern Beaches region is grappling with an unusual environmental issue after nine local beaches were closed on January 14, 2025, due to the discovery of ball-shaped debris washed up along the shore. The debris, which is mostly white or grey and marble-sized, has raised concerns for public safety, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

Northern Beaches Council was alerted to the presence of the mysterious material by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is working alongside the state agency to collect samples for testing. While the debris found so far appears to be small, with some pieces being larger than others, officials are prioritizing a thorough investigation to identify its composition and ensure the safety of the public.

Affected beaches include Manly, Dee Why, Long Reef, Queenscliff, Freshwater, North and South Curl Curl, North Steyne, and North Narrabeen. Beachgoers are urged to stay away from these locations and avoid contact with the material while the clean-up operation is underway. Authorities are also inspecting other local beaches for any similar debris.

The Council has called on the public to report any sightings of the debris on other beaches, urging people to contact the Northern Beaches Council directly at 1300 434 434. Meanwhile, efforts to safely remove the material and carry out further testing will continue as investigations unfold.
