Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf backs Nigel Farage’s evolving position on Shamima Begum, citing national security

Reform UK Chairman Zia Yusuf has stepped forward to clarify and defend Nigel Farage’s comments on Shamima Begum’s potential return to Britain, amid criticism from detractors. During a GB News appearance, Yusuf urged viewers to consider the nuances of Farage’s statements.

Nigel truly cares about the British people and always prioritises their safety,” Yusuf said, addressing accusations that Farage has softened his stance on the former ISIS member.

Farage, known for his hard-line views on immigration and national security, caused a stir when he told ITV News he was “thoughtful” about the possibility of Begum’s return. He explained, “I’ve instinctively never wanted to bring her back, but I’m thoughtful now. She isn’t an all-out ISIS killer. She’s a lesser part of the equation.”

Farage’s comments reflect growing concerns over Syria’s shifting political landscape, with the recent regime changes potentially creating complications for Western governments managing cases like Begum’s. Despite his apparent openness to revisiting his stance, Farage emphasised that his position remains centred on safeguarding British security interests.

Shamima Begum, who left the UK in 2015 to join ISIS as a teenager, has been stripped of her British citizenship. Her case has divided public opinion, with many viewing her as a security risk, while others argue she should be allowed to return to face justice in the UK.

Zia Yusuf reiterated that Farage’s remarks reflect careful consideration of Britain’s evolving security needs. “He’s not flip-flopping,” Yusuf stated. “His focus has always been on what benefits the safety and well-being of the British public.”

As debates over Begum’s future continue, Farage’s shift in tone highlights the complexities of balancing national security with individual cases. Reform UK’s leadership remains steadfast in advocating policies that they argue will protect the country
