External Affairs Minister highlights diplomatic efforts as India and China navigate complex relations
In a significant development concerning India-China relations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced that the disengagement process along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has been successfully completed. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, Jaishankar expressed optimism that both nations would return to a state of peace and stability, allowing for regular patrolling akin to the situation in 2020.
Jaishankar stated, “We reached an agreement on patrolling… We have gone back to where we were in 2020. You can say, with that, the disengagement process with China has been completed.” He highlighted that previous blocks imposed by both sides have now been resolved, leading to a mutual understanding that will facilitate patrolling in the area.
Describing the disengagement as a “good and positive development,” Jaishankar credited it to “patient and very persevering diplomacy.” He underscored that the rise of both India and China as neighbouring powers necessitates careful management through diplomatic channels, given the complexities involved in their proximity.

However, India has remained cautious, maintaining that no significant dialogue will occur until the border issues are fully resolved. The recent Chinese charm offensive and India’s prudent engagement reflect a balancing act aimed at fostering a stable relationship despite lingering tensions.
Jaishankar emphasised the importance of a tranquil border for the overall health of India-China relations, stating, “If you disturb the peace and tranquillity, how do you expect the rest of the relationship to go fine?” This perspective highlights the Indian government’s focus on ensuring that stability along the border is a prerequisite for any broader engagement between the two nations.
As the situation develops, the emphasis on diplomacy remains critical, particularly as both countries navigate their roles as emerging powers in a rapidly changing global landscape.
