Tragedy strikes as families gather for the Indian Air Force’s 92nd IAF Day celebration at Marina Beach

In a tragic turn of events, at least five spectators died during the Indian Air Force’s air show in Chennai, held to celebrate the 92nd IAF Day. Reports indicate that one individual was declared dead upon arrival at Royapettah Government Hospital, while another suffered a sunstroke after being stuck in traffic on his bike. The chaos followed an overwhelmingly large crowd at the event, raising concerns over crowd management and safety.

DMK MP K. Kanimozhi expressed her sorrow over the fatalities, stating, “The news of the death of five people is very sad and painful.” She emphasized the need for better crowd control during such events, especially given the high temperatures and the large gatherings that ensued.

Criticism is mounting regarding the Air Force’s push to set a Limca Book of World Records by attracting an estimated 1.5 million spectators, which appears to have been beyond manageable limits. Eyewitnesses noted that while traffic was regulated prior to the event, the influx of attendees led to chaos as people attempted to leave after the air show, which began around 11 a.m.

The elevated MRTS railway stations along Marina Beach transformed into crowded hotspots as people tried to find transport. With temperatures soaring and a lack of drinking water facilities, many spectators, including children, were seen exhausted and dehydrated, resting on the sidewalks.

Witnesses reported that police presence was ineffective, with personnel unable to regulate the chaotic situation or assist stranded ambulances. A mother attending the event voiced her frustration, saying, “The state government has failed us. No proper arrangements at all either at the venue or on the roads.”

The Chennai police had deployed 6,500 officers and 1,500 home guards for the event, but reports indicate a breakdown in coordination and support for attendees. Health Minister Ma Subramanian stated that arrangements were made in coordination with the IAF, including temporary toilets and drinking water stations. However, another source claimed, “No one dead in the crowd. No death is related to crowd or mismanagement,” leaving the veracity of these claims in question.

The air show, which featured a performance by the Special Garud Force and showcased 72 aircraft, including Rafale and indigenously manufactured Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, has sparked discussions about the safety measures and management of large public events in Chennai.
