Netflix conviction takes a chilling turn as Watts describes horrifying moments leading to family’s demise

Convicted killer Chris Watts, infamous for the brutal murder of his pregnant wife, Shanann, and their two young daughters, Bella and Celeste, in 2018, has sent shockwaves from behind bars. In a disturbing twist, Watts has penned chilling letters from prison to author Cheryln Cadle, unraveling the grim details of the fateful events.

Watts, who initially feigned ignorance about his family’s disappearance in a desperate plea for their return on television, later pleaded guilty to the murders. The case gained notoriety through the hit Netflix documentary, American Murder: The Family Next Door, which delved into the harrowing sequence of events.

In letters featured in Cadle’s book, The Murders of Chris Watts, the convicted murderer described the moments leading up to the deaths of his wife and children. The haunting revelations include Watts attempting to smother his daughters, aged three and four, before brutally murdering Shanann.

Detailing the gruesome scene, Watts wrote, “August 13, morning of, I went to the girls’ room first, before Shanann and I had our argument. I went to Bella’s room, then Cece’s room and used a pillow from their bed [to kill them]. That’s why the cause of death was smothering. After I left Cece’s room, then I climbed back in bed with Shanann and our argument ensued.”

Watts went on to recount the failed attempt to smother his daughters, revealing that both Bella and Celeste woke up after Shanann’s demise. The killer coldly described their injuries, stating, “Bella’s eyes were bruised, and both girls looked like they had been through trauma.”

The revelations provide a horrifying glimpse into the mind of a man who, after the murders, concealed the bodies of his daughters in oil tanks near their mother’s strangled corpse on the property of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, his former workplace.

Cadle, who interviewed Watts extensively, shared her unsettling experience, noting that Watts spoke about the killings with a disturbing nonchalance. She described how his eyes would turn ‘black’ when discussing the gruesome events, adding an eerie dimension to the already spine-chilling tale.

As the prison letters come to light, the public is left grappling with the unsettling details of a crime that shocked the nation, once again highlighting the dark depths of Chris Watts’ heinous actions.
