Fellow cyclist Rohan Dennis accused in fatal incident involving wife Melissa Hoskins

In a shocking turn of events, former Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving in the tragic demise of his wife, Melissa Hoskins. The incident unfolded in South Australia, with new claims emerging about the circumstances leading to the fatal accident.

Dennis, a celebrated Olympic cyclist and former world champion, now faces serious charges, including driving without due care and endangering life. If found guilty, the 33-year-old could be sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison. The incident occurred just after 8 pm on Saturday, as per South Australia police reports.

Details surrounding the incident suggest that Melissa Hoskins may have jumped onto the car’s bonnet and attempted to grab a door handle. Shockingly, it’s alleged that Dennis continued driving until she fell off, and she may have been dragged some distance by the vehicle, identified as Dennis’ dark grey 2022 Volkswagen Amarok Highline V6.

Hoskins, a former world champion cyclist herself, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital. Despite efforts, she passed away overnight as a result of her injuries. The couple, married since February 2018, shared a family photo on social media with two young children just days before the tragedy, captioned: “Merry Christmas from our family to yours.”

Marne Fechner, chief executive of AusCycling, expressed condolences, describing Melissa as a “champion cyclist who thrilled and inspired us.” Melissa began her competitive cycling career at 16 and retired at 25, leaving an indelible mark on the cycling world.

Former teammate Anna Meares shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, “I have a very heavy heart. My thoughts are with their children, family, and fellow friends. This is a very difficult and tragic time. RIP.”

The worldwide association of women cyclists, CPA Women, conveyed their shock at the tragic news, sending thoughts to those who loved Hoskins. Hoskins, who competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, retired in 2017, while Dennis, a two-time world champion, announced his retirement from cycling last year.

As the investigation unfolds, the cycling community is left in mourning over the loss of a talented athlete, with many questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
