Owen Beck returns to Liverpool after hamstring surgery ends his Derby loan before a debut
Liverpool left back Owen Beck is returning to the club after his loan spell at Derby County was cut short due to a serious hamstring injury that required surgery. The twenty three year old did not make a single senior appearance for Derby following his move in July and now faces a four month spell on the sidelines.
Beck had signed a new contract with Liverpool before joining Derby on a season long loan. The arrangement was expected to give him regular Championship minutes and continue his development after previous productive loan experience. However persistent fitness problems prevented him from featuring for the Derby first team. His only recent outing came for Derby’s under twenty one side, during which he was forced off after forty minutes.
Derby head coach John Eustace confirmed that Beck needed surgery to repair the injury and explained that the full back would now be out for an extended period. Eustace said that the length of the recovery meant Derby and Liverpool had agreed to end the loan early so Beck could undergo rehabilitation at his parent club.

Speaking to reporters including those from local media, Eustace expressed sympathy for the player. He said he felt sorry for Beck and explained that he had worked with him previously at Blackburn. Eustace said the club were pleased to secure a player of his ability and believed the loan had represented strong recruitment. The head coach added that coaching staff and supporters had looked forward to seeing Beck play throughout the season.
Eustace acknowledged that Beck had experienced a difficult time since arriving at Derby and said the setback was an unfortunate part of a young footballer’s development. He said the club believed Beck would return stronger in the future but confirmed that his immediate recovery would take place away from Derby.
Beck’s spell had been viewed as an opportunity to build on his progress at Liverpool. His pre season involvement included training and matches with the senior squad and he travelled with the team during a summer tour. Liverpool authorised his loan with the expectation that regular game time in the Championship would accelerate his readiness for higher levels of competition.
However injuries restricted him from integrating fully into Derby’s plans. Early season fitness issues continued to interrupt his training schedule and prevented the coaching staff from selecting him for competitive fixtures. His appearance for the under twenty one side was intended as a step toward a return but the recurrence of the problem halted those plans.
With surgery now complete Beck begins a recovery period that could last up to four months. The timeline means he will be unavailable for Derby regardless of any progress made during rehabilitation and Liverpool will manage his recovery through their medical department. The club has dealt with similar long term injuries in recent years and will prepare a structured plan to guide the defender through the stages of treatment, conditioning and eventual return to training.
Derby will reassess their left back options for the remainder of the campaign. Eustace noted that the loan had been made with optimism and praised Beck’s professionalism despite the challenges he faced. He said everyone at the club wished him well during his recovery and emphasised that the experience, though disappointing, would aid his long term development as a player.
Liverpool have yet to comment publicly on the termination of the loan but are expected to monitor his progress as part of their wider squad planning. Beck will now work toward regaining fitness with the goal of returning to competitive football once his rehabilitation is complete.
