Former PM and pop star confirm romance after months of rumours with a Paris cabaret appearance

After months of speculation, Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry have confirmed their relationship, stepping out hand-in-hand at a Paris cabaret show to mark the singer’s 41st birthday.

The former Canadian prime minister and the American pop icon were photographed leaving the Crazy Horse nightclub on Saturday night, smiling and waving as fans serenaded them with “Happy Birthday.” Perry, radiant in a scarlet scoop-neck dress, clutched a pair of red roses while Trudeau, 53, looked relaxed in a dark suit and black T-shirt.

Their exit — coordinated for waiting photographers — marked the couple’s first official appearance together, transforming months of whispered rumours into a global headline. The pair slipped into a people carrier and disappeared into the Paris night as onlookers snapped photos and shouted their congratulations.

The scene followed weeks of speculation that the two had grown close since being spotted dining together in Montreal in July. At the time, Perry had recently ended her engagement to actor Orlando Bloom, while Trudeau was adjusting to life after stepping down as prime minister earlier this year.

Witnesses at the Montreal restaurant Le Violon recalled seeing Perry lean across the table during an intimate dinner, laughing and playing with her hair as they shared plates of lobster. Two days later, Trudeau was photographed attending one of Perry’s concerts in the city with one of his children, further fuelling the rumours.

Then, earlier this month, paparazzi pictures showed the pair aboard a yacht off the coast of California — Trudeau shirtless, Perry in a swimsuit — sharing a kiss in the sun. The photos appeared to confirm what many already suspected: that the friendship had turned into something more.

According to People magazine, the couple’s chemistry was immediate. “They had an instant connection,” a source told the outlet. “They have a lot in common — it will take a while to see where this goes, but there’s definitely an attraction.” The insider added that while Perry continues her Life of Our Times world tour, Trudeau is “figuring out his life now that he’s no longer prime minister.”

Trudeau, who resigned earlier this year amid plummeting poll numbers for Canada’s Liberal Party, had been married to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau for 18 years before announcing their separation in 2023. The former couple share three children.

For Perry, the relationship marks a new chapter following her split from Bloom, with whom she also shares a child. Friends say the singer has been “reenergised and happy,” describing her Paris birthday trip as “a celebration of new beginnings.”

The Crazy Horse cabaret, known for its avant-garde burlesque shows, has a history of hosting international celebrities. Founded in 1951 by artist Alain Bernadin, it has drawn stars from Pamela Anderson, who famously performed a striptease on a Harley-Davidson, to Dita Von Teese.

Saturday’s spectacle, though, was less about performance and more about making a statement. Perry and Trudeau’s public debut instantly dominated social media, with fans dubbing them the most unexpected couple of 2025.

The pair’s relationship has also sparked debate — a collision of pop culture glamour and political intrigue. Trudeau’s supporters have largely welcomed the news, describing Perry as a “perfectly modern partner” for a leader long known for his progressive image. Others, however, have accused the former prime minister of courting attention during a politically uncertain period.

Still, the couple appeared unfazed by the attention. As Perry clutched her roses and Trudeau offered a brief wave, both smiled for cameras before retreating into their car. It was a meticulously choreographed moment — a blend of romance, celebrity, and strategy.

For a politician used to the spotlight and a performer born in it, this was not just an outing — it was an announcement.

And, in true showbusiness fashion, they made it unforgettable.
