Elon Musk vows to crush Trump’s backers over $5trn bill as the president hits back with fury
Elon Musk has reignited his public feud with Donald Trump, tearing into the president’s massive tax and spending bill while threatening political vengeance against lawmakers who support it.
In a fresh barrage of attacks, the Tesla CEO called Trump’s so-called “big beautiful bill” a “disgusting abomination” that would deepen the US national debt by $5 trillion. Weeks after their dramatic fallout, Musk returned to X to declare war on the bill — and those who back it.
“Those who campaigned on cutting spending but voted for this mess should hang their heads in shame,” Musk posted. “And they will lose their primary next year if it’s the last thing I do on this Earth.”
He didn’t stop there. The billionaire warned he might put the faces of pro-bill lawmakers on posters labelled “LIAR” and “VOTED TO INCREASE AMERICA’S DEBT.”
The comments drew an immediate response from President Trump, who fired back on Truth Social with a personal jab. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” he wrote. “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production — and our Country would save a FORTUNE.”
Trump then hinted that Musk’s own government department could turn on him. “Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
Musk currently heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency he helped create after backing Trump’s campaign with an estimated $250 million. DOGE has already axed over 120,000 federal jobs in an effort to slash bureaucracy.
Now, Musk claims the new legislation could obliterate those savings and unravel the work he led. “This is utterly insane and destructive,” he wrote, calling the bill evidence that “we live in a one-party country — the PORKY PIG PARTY!!”
He even floated the idea of launching a new political party, writing: “Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people.”
While Musk previously said some of his posts about Trump “went too far,” that remorse seems short-lived. The tech mogul had briefly deleted a controversial post accusing the president of ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein — a claim never substantiated. After a short-lived apology, Musk is now doubling down.
The feud has escalated since Trump introduced his sweeping tax and infrastructure package, which critics say could dramatically inflate the national debt. Despite backing Trump during the election and enjoying political power through DOGE, Musk has emerged as one of the bill’s loudest opponents.
The fallout has stunned Washington. Musk, once considered a Trump ally, now threatens to campaign against his political supporters and derail his economic legacy.
Back in February, the two men appeared side by side in the Oval Office, signalling a close working relationship. But insiders say their alliance has crumbled, replaced by mistrust and power struggles.
Trump, for his part, dismissed Musk’s fury as self-interest. “He may get more subsidy than any human being in history,” Trump wrote. “He’s angry the gravy train is slowing.”
With the Senate still debating the bill and DOGE under scrutiny, the Musk-Trump clash has become a headline-dominating power struggle. And as both men prepare for another election year showdown, their war of words shows no sign of cooling.
