Arsenal have reportedly agreed a fee of about £75m to sign Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle, bringing one of the summer’s most painful transfer sagas close to an end.

The Bruno Guimarães transfer is a major blow for Newcastle, who had started the window insisting they would only sell their most important player if an extraordinary offer arrived.

That stance has now weakened. According to the report, Arsenal have secured an agreement for millions less than Newcastle had initially wanted, with the Tyneside club once valuing the Brazilian midfielder at around £100m.

The final fee is understood to be closer to £75m, meaning Arsenal may feel they have forced the price down at a crucial moment.

Agent Kia Joorabchian is said to have played a significant role in the talks. Guimarães reportedly brought him in to help negotiate a move after making clear earlier in the summer that he wanted to leave Newcastle.

The Brazil international first told former manager Eddie Howe in June that he was desperate to move. That decision created a major problem for Newcastle, who had hoped to keep the midfielder at the centre of their plans.

The situation also appears to have played a part in Howe’s own departure. The report says Guimarães’ expected exit was one of the key factors behind Howe’s decision to quit.

Once Howe had gone, Newcastle’s chances of persuading Guimarães to stay became even slimmer. Talks with Arsenal began on Sunday, and the agreement of a fee now gives Newcastle the chance to move on from a damaging episode.

Club officials are said to view the £75m fee as a strong deal, especially as Arsenal were the only club seriously interested in the player. Guimarães will turn 29 later this year, which may have affected how far other clubs were willing to go.

Even so, the sale will hurt. Since joining from Lyon for £35m in January 2022, Guimarães has become one of Newcastle’s most important players and a key figure in their rise.

For Arsenal, the move would add another proven Premier League midfielder with quality, experience and personality. Guimarães has shown he can control games, carry the ball under pressure and bring aggression to midfield battles.

The timing matters. Matthias Jaissle is expected to be confirmed as Newcastle’s new manager, and resolving the Guimarães situation before he properly begins gives him a cleaner start.

Guimarães arrived at Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in Spain on Monday and reportedly told the club again that he still wanted to leave. By that stage, the direction of travel was clear.

For Newcastle fans, the deal will feel like another bruising transfer defeat. The club wanted to project strength, but they are now set to lose their best midfielder for less than their original asking price.

For Arsenal, it looks like a statement signing. They are taking one of Newcastle’s most influential players and doing it at a fee they believe represents value.
