Former British and Commonwealth boxing champion, Willie Limond, has died at the age of 45. The Scottish boxer, renowned for his contributions to the sport, passed away early Monday morning after battling an illness for nearly ten days, as shared by his son Jake on Instagram.

Willie Limond’s career spanned nearly a quarter of a century, with an impressive record of 42 wins in 48 professional fights, 13 of which were by knockout. His skill and determination inside the ring were evident throughout his career, which included holding the EBU European Union super-featherweight title in 2004, the Commonwealth lightweight title from 2006 to 2007, the Commonwealth super-lightweight title from 2013 to 2014, and the British super-lightweight title in 2014.

Limond, who initially started his career in sports as a footballer, making five league appearances for Albion Rovers in the late 1990s, transitioned to boxing and quickly made a name for himself. His notable bouts include a match against Amir Khan in 2007 and against Tyrone Nurse in 2016, both pivotal moments in his boxing career.

St Andrew’s Sporting Club, where Limond trained and fought, released a statement expressing their profound sadness and shock over his passing. “Willie was not only a legend of the sport but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all,” the statement read. The club extended their condolences to his children, Jake, Drew, Macy, and the rest of the Limond family, highlighting the deep personal loss felt by the community.

Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world, including from former opponent Curtis Woodhouse. Woodhouse, who lost to Limond in a memorable British light-welterweight title fight in 2014, expressed his devastation on social media, remembering Limond not only as a great fighter but also as a great man. “We stayed in touch after our fight and always had a laugh together. Absolutely gutted. Rest in peace champ,” Woodhouse wrote.

Willie Limond’s legacy in boxing is marked by his tenacity, skill, and sportsmanship, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him and on the sport itself. His sudden departure is a significant loss to the boxing community and his fans worldwide
