Wales closed roof stadium secures new protocol with six nations for consistent conditions

For the next two years, Wales will play all their international rugby fixtures at the Principality Stadium with the roof closed. This follows a protocol change agreed upon with the Six Nations, which previously required mutual consent between both teams to close the retractable roof.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) believes that closing the roof will offer consistent conditions, benefiting players and creating an improved fan experience. “When the roof is shut, the noise is intimidating, and it’s fantastic for both the fans and players,” said stadium manager Mark Williams.

The WRU has also confirmed that both home fixtures during the 2025 Six Nations will be played before sell-out crowds of 74,000. Ireland will visit on 22 February, while England follows on 15 March. WRU chief executive Abi Tierney celebrated the high demand for tickets, reflecting the excitement surrounding Wales’ upcoming campaign.

Wales, who are coming off a difficult 2024 Six Nations campaign where they finished at the bottom, will open their 2025 campaign against France in Paris on 31 January, before facing Italy in Rome on 8 February. The team also travels to Scotland before concluding the campaign at home against England.

For the first time in history, all of Wales’ international rugby games at the Principality Stadium will be played with the roof closed, ensuring that every match is played in the same conditions.
