U.S. Secretly sends long-range missiles to Ukraine, escalating military aid

The Biden administration discreetly provided ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in U.S. military support amid the ongoing conflict with Russia

In a covert operation, the United States has provided Ukraine with long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), capable of striking deep into Russian-occupied territories and potentially into Russia itself. This strategic military aid aims to bolster Ukraine’s capabilities against Russian advances, as confirmed by Pentagon officials.

The ATACMS, with a maximum range of 186 miles, was first deployed by Ukraine last week, marking a new phase in the U.S. support for the war-torn nation. Previously, in October, the U.S. had supplied Ukraine with mid-range versions of these missiles, but persistent requests from Ukrainian officials led to the authorization of the more potent long-range versions by President Joe Biden in February.

Jake Sullivan, the White House’s national security adviser, detailed the timeline during a Wednesday briefing, revealing that the missile shipments began moving in March. “The President quietly directed his national security team to send ATACMS,” stated Pentagon spokesman Maj. Charlie Dietz. The decision was kept under wraps to maintain operational security at Ukraine’s request, highlighting the sensitive nature of the military aid.

The recent utilization of these missiles includes a significant strike on the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. The move reflects a tactical escalation designed to pressure Russian military assets and infrastructure within the occupied regions.

This military support comes amidst broader discussions within the Biden administration about the implications of escalating aid to Ukraine. Officials have expressed concerns about the availability of long-range missile systems due to readiness issues. However, these concerns were eventually addressed, allowing for the provision of the missiles.

The aid package aligns with America’s continued support for Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in 2022. Despite initial hesitations over supplying more advanced weaponry like F-16 jets or certain tanks, the U.S. has expanded its military support, which now includes long-range missile capabilities.

The Biden administration’s decision to enhance Ukraine’s arsenal with ATACMS missiles is seen as a response to Russia’s increased reliance on ballistic missiles provided by North Korea, which have been used against Ukrainian civilian targets. The U.S. has warned Russia against these acquisitions and their renewed attacks on civilian infrastructure.

The geopolitical ramifications of this decision are profound, as it signifies a significant shift in U.S. policy towards direct involvement in the conflict through enhanced military aid. This development could potentially alter the dynamics on the battlefield, giving Ukrainian forces a strategic advantage in their continued resistance against Russian aggression.
