Ukraine at risk of defeat in 2024, warns UK military expert

General Sir Richard Barrons outlines the grim prospects for Ukraine as it faces severe military shortages and a looming Russian summer offensive

General Sir Richard Barrons, former commander of the UK’s Joint Forces Command, has issued a stark warning regarding Ukraine’s potential defeat in the ongoing conflict with Russia. According to Barrons, there is a “serious risk” that Ukraine could succumb to Russian forces this year, driven by dwindling resources and waning morale among its troops.

Ukraine’s military, despite showing remarkable resilience, is now critically low on ammunition, troops, and air defences. This shortage comes after a failed counter-offensive last year which did not succeed in reclaiming significant territories from Russian control. Now, with Russia preparing for a summer offensive, the situation appears increasingly dire for Ukraine.

General Barrons outlined the expected strategy of the upcoming Russian offensive, noting the disproportionate resources Russia has at its disposal, including a five-to-one advantage in artillery and ammunition, supplemented by new weapons such as the FAB glide bomb. This bomb, an adapted Soviet-era device now equipped with GPS guidance, has been particularly effective against Ukrainian defences.

The focus of the Russian military effort could likely shift towards Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which has been under constant bombardment and is strategically significant due to its proximity to the Russian border. The fall of Kharkiv would represent not only a tactical loss but also a severe blow to Ukrainian morale and its economic stability.

The conflict’s epicentre in the Donbas region has seen some of the fiercest fighting, with towns like Bakhmut and Avdiivka changing hands after protracted battles. Here, Ukraine has suffered heavy casualties, while Russia continues to deploy large numbers of troops.

Dr. Jack Watling of the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) highlighted another critical challenge for Ukraine: the extensive length of the frontline, which is impossible for Ukrainian forces to defend entirely. This situation gives Russia the strategic advantage of selecting where to apply its military pressure, potentially leading to significant territorial gains.

General Christopher Cavoli, Commander of US Forces in Europe, has emphasized the urgent need for additional Western military aid to Ukraine. Without significant reinforcements in weapons and ammunition, Ukrainian forces risk being outgunned by an overwhelming ratio.

As the conflict evolves, Russia’s strategic goals may extend beyond territorial gains. According to Dr. Watling, the broader Russian aim could be to crush the Ukrainian spirit and convince Western nations that continuing support for Ukraine is futile.

As the international community continues to watch and respond, the coming months will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the war and Ukraine’s fate as a sovereign nation.
